Day 01 · Thu Apr 2
Touchdown
Land at HNL arrive
Grab bags, shuttle or taxi to Hilton Garden Inn Waikiki Beach (~30 min). Or TheBus to Waikiki — $3.25.
Check in & settle vibe
Drop bags, change into island mode. Hotel has pool — tomorrow's breakfast is included.
Stroll Kalakaua Ave see
Walk International Marketplace, Kuhio Beach. Get oriented. Waikiki sunset is the welcome committee.
First dinner on island eat
Keep it casual — food court, local family restaurant on the strip. ~$25/person. Don't overthink it, you just landed.
Pick up car + drive to Lanikai drive
Pick up rental at 7:30 AM. Drive via H-1 & Pali Hwy to Kailua (~35 min). Park near the Pillbox trailhead on Kaelepulu Dr — street parking is free but limited. One spot covers both the hike and Lanikai Beach (5-10 min walk downhill). Arrive by ~8:30 AM to grab a spot before it fills up. Look for unrestricted residential streets — some are 2-hour limited.
Lanikai Pillbox Hike hike
Short but steep (~1.8 mi round trip, 30–45 min up). Two WWII pillboxes at the top with panoramic views of the Mokulua Islands and Kailua Bay. Still cool enough at 8:30 and you'll beat the crowds. Trailhead on Kaelepulu Dr — free, no reservation.
Lanikai Beach beach
Walk down from the trailhead (5-10 min). Consistently rated one of the best beaches in the US. Powdery white sand, calm turquoise water, views of the Mokuluas. No facilities — bring water, snacks, and sunscreen. Take your time here, this is the main event.
Lunch in Kailua Town eat
5 min drive from Lanikai. Great food scene — poke, açaí, local plate lunch. Walk the main strip after.
Kailua Beach + kayak option beach optional
Skip this if Lanikai wiped you out — you already had an A-tier beach day. But if you've got energy: bigger beach with full facilities, rent kayaks to the Mokulua Islands (~30 min each way). Or just post up and swim.
Drive back to Waikiki drive
Via Pali Hwy (~35 min). Drop car at hotel or keep for tomorrow if doing back-to-back rental days.
First Friday + dinner eat optional
It's First Friday — Chinatown galleries open late, street vendors, live music. But you've been up since 6:30 AM in the sun — totally fine to skip and just grab dinner in Waikiki. Friday night fireworks visible from the beach if you're still awake.
Pearl Harbor history
TheBus or taxi from Waikiki (~45 min). USS Arizona Memorial program is free ($1 recreation.gov service fee). Tickets released 8 weeks in advance — they go fast, sometimes gone in minutes. Check in at the Memorial Theater 10 min before your ticket time. Visitor Center open 7 AM–5 PM. Parking $7/day (mobile pay or kiosk). Plan 2–3 hrs.
Return to Waikiki + lunch eat
Bus or taxi back (~45 min). Grab lunch at hotel or local café before the hike.
Diamond Head Hike hike
0.8 mi Summit Trail, ~1.5 hrs round trip. $5/person entry (non-resident). Reservations open 6 AM, last entry at 4 PM (must enter by 4:30). Book up to 30 days in advance. Panoramic ocean views from the top.
Kapiolani Park vibe optional
You'll walk through here on the way back from Diamond Head anyway. The Zoo ($21) is skippable unless you really want it — you've already had a full day.
Dinner + Bar Leather Apron eat
Treat yourself — you hiked and learned some history. Grab dinner in Waikiki, then head to Bar Leather Apron downtown for cocktails. One of the best bars in the world (literally on the 50 Best list). Intimate 6-seat bar + lounge in a random office building mezzanine. Open 5 PM–midnight, Wed–Sat. Reservations recommended — book on OpenTable or their site.
Hanauma Bay snorkeling beach
Pick up car, drive 30 min via Kalanianaole Hwy. Opens at 6:45 AM — arrive early, only 300 parking spots (first come first served even with a reservation). $25/person entry (cash or Visa/MC). Kids 12 & under free. Mandatory 9-min orientation video. Only 1,400 guests/day. Snorkel gear rental at the bay: $25 for mask + snorkel + fins. Closed Mon & Tue.
Halona Blowhole see
Quick stop on the way — 10 min. Watch water shoot through volcanic rock. Free, small parking area. Also peek at Eternity Beach below.
Makapu'u Lighthouse Hike hike optional
10 min past the blowhole. 2 mi round trip, ~1 hr. Paved trail, ocean views — sometimes you can see Moloka'i. Free. Great if you have energy after snorkeling, but totally fine to skip and head back to Waikiki early.
Lunch eat
Grab food in Hawaii Kai on the way back — quick and easy.
Return car + beach or pool vibe
Head back to Waikiki (~30 min). Return car, then chill at Kuhio Beach or the hotel pool. It's Easter Sunday — take it easy.
Easter dinner eat
Some places may have special menus or modified hours. Check ahead if you have a spot in mind.
Sleep in + hotel breakfast eat
No alarm. Three big days behind you. Use the free breakfast, take your time.
Beach day — zero plans beach
Kuhio Beach or Sans Souci. Snorkel gear from any ABC Store. Read, swim, nap. The best vacation days have no schedule.
Ala Moana or Waikiki Aquarium see optional
Mall is 1 mi from hotel. Aquarium (9 AM–4:30 PM) is a chill option. Or keep doing nothing — equally valid. It's your rest day, no obligations.
Sunset + drinks vibe
Sunset drinks. House Without A Key at Halekulani — live Hawaiian music, ocean view, no cover.
Last real dinner eat
Last night out — make it count. Best meal of the trip goes here.
